Steve Holtzman
Uniting to protect the environment
Steve Holtzman has always felt a close connection to the natural world. “All of my most vivid, intense memories from my childhood are in the woods, fields, hillsides, mountains, and lakes,” he says. That connection deepened when he traveled to Utah and Maine as an intern with the Student Conservation Association, and shaped an environmental philosophy he carries with him today.
“Protecting the environment is the ultimate community issue. It should always unify us and never divide us. We are, in the biggest sense of the word, together when we confront climate change,” he says. “We’re all vulnerable, regardless of where we live.”
His belief in the power of nonpartisan, science-based solutions led him to EDF, and when he learned about the Climate Corps fellowship program — a training program that pairs graduate students with companies and public institutions to help them meet their climate and energy goals — it reminded him of how his formative experiences shaped his career.
“I’ve been impressed with Climate Corps because it provides opportunities for future leaders that they can leverage for years to come while also taking meaningful action to address the climate crisis now,” he says.
He hopes others will join him in supporting EDF and other organizations that are working to deal with climate change. “I hope everyone approaches it in a spirit of true community and compassion for our children and generations beyond.”
Hongpeng Lei
Securing a climate-safe future for children
“Philanthropy plays an important role building trust and fostering cooperation, which are critical for delivering on global climate efforts,” says Hongpeng Lei, global director of climate at the Children’s Investment Fund Foundation (CIFF). He urges global organizations like CIFF and EDF to play a bridging role between countries to facilitate the global exchanges of ideas, solutions and experiences.
“Sometimes people ask why a children’s charity is focused on climate change, but the connection seems obvious to me — the climate crisis is the single greatest threat to today’s children and those of future generations,” he says. “I have a daughter, and she loves to discuss what a schoolgirl like her can do to help tackle climate change. I hope to give her, and all other children, a climate-safe future, which also means cleaner air, energy security and sustainable jobs.”
He seeks opportunities to support systemic action and reform agendas that can create impact commensurate with the size of the climate challenge that the world faces. With a grant from CIFF, EDF supported the establishment and expansion of China National Emissions Trading System — the largest emissions trading platform in the world. This work helps the trading system maximize its potential to reduce climate pollution and benefits participating industries.
“EDF’s dedication to sustainable development has been instrumental in creating innovative, cost-effective solutions to environmental and climate challenges,” he says. “Our partnership has left an indelible mark on the global environmental movement and transition to a net-zero future.”
Don and Patti Maltase
Helping to save the Earth
One of the reasons Don and Patti Maltase love Vancouver, Washington, is because of its natural beauty. The city, known for its urban trees, is just across the Columbia River from Portland, Oregon, and a short trip from both the Pacific Ocean and Mt. Hood.
“We’re boaters, and when we are out on the water, we see the beauty of the natural world all around us,” Don says. “We also know climate change is real, and a threat to the places we love. We want to do anything we can to help avoid a climate disaster.”
After retiring from their careers as commercial real estate brokers and developers, they decided they no longer needed one of their rental properties, which had appreciated significantly, and they realized that donating the property was an opportunity to make a difference.
They worked with EDF’s Planned Giving team to donate the property in 2022, and because they transferred ownership directly to EDF, it resulted in a considerably larger gift than would have been possible if they sold the property, as well as a tax deduction that could be applied to other taxable income.
“We felt that EDF was the best organization to support because of how well the organization identifies challenges and then takes pragmatic, tangible steps to solve them,” says Patti. “We have been very fortunate, and this was a chance to do our small part to help save the Earth for future generations.”
Thais Lopez Vogel and David S. Vogel
Creating a sustainable future
Thais Lopez Vogel and David S. Vogel, co-founders of VoLo Foundation, believe that protecting the environment is critical to safeguard the world their children and grandchildren will inherit. “Climate action isn’t just a cause; it’s a commitment to the health and quality of life of those we love,” Thais says.
Together, they formed VoLo Foundation in 2014 to accelerate change and global impact by supporting science-based climate solutions, enhancing education, and improving health. Their belief in data-driven approaches to climate solutions led them to EDF.
“It’s critical to involve science and economics to tackle climate change,” David says. “It’s not just individual actions that will get us there, but large-scale shifts supported by data.” He appreciates EDF’s evidence-based approach and how EDF works collaboratively across sectors to achieve measurable results.
VoLo Foundation partnered with EDF to make communities healthier and more resilient to the impacts of climate change by promoting energy efficiency, renewable energy and other climate solutions in their home state of Florida.
“Living in Florida and experiencing firsthand the real impacts of climate change — from extreme weather events to the challenges they bring to communities — has affected me and my family,” Thais says. “When EDF partners with communities to improve their resilience to climate challenges, they’re protecting families like ours.”
They are heartened by advances in climate policy and clean energy solutions, and they are committed to working for a transition to a sustainable energy system that provides lasting jobs and resilient communities.
“This is the time to take bold action. Science is clear, and the solutions are within reach,” David says. “Supporting organizations like EDF is one way to ensure that we’re moving in the right direction. We can create a sustainable future if we’re willing to act now.”
